On the Farm: Iron Pigs Edition

Throughout the season The Broad Street Line will update you on how the Phillies’ top prospects are performing in the minors.  With yesterday’s call up of Domonic Brown, the organization’s best prospect, here at the rest of the top prospects playing for Ryne Sandberg.

AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs

Mike Zagurski:  The hefty lefty has been up and down between Philadelphia and Allentown over the last few years, but he is finally putting together a consistent season in AAA.

In 11.1 innings, Zagurski is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 19 strikeouts.  Control will be the obstacle he needs to overcome on his way to staying in the Phils’ pen.  He has already walked seven batters this year.

David Herndon: Last year’s Rule 5 pick was sent to the Iron Pigs out of spring training, but he has thrived so far this season.  In 9 innings, Herndon is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, nine strikeouts and only one walk.  Phillies’ pitching coach wanted him to work on his off-speed pitches, and if he continues at this pace, he could be the next reliever to get called up.

Michael Schwimer: The bullpen of the future looks bright because of young hurlers like Schwimer.  In 21.2 innings pitched in AAA this year, Schwimer is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 30 strikeouts.

Check out the stats of the entire Iron Pigs roster.
