The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting the Flyers will host the New York Rangers in the NHL’s 5th annual Winter Classic on Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park.
This will be the Flyers’ second time playing in the NHL’s annual mid season showcase.
The NHL is moving the game from its usual New Years Day slot to avoid competing with the NFL schedule, which includes a week 17 Eagles – Redskins matchup at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Flyers and Rangers have agreed to participate in the acclaimed HBO series Road to the NHL Winter Classic, which will feature a behind the scenes perspective on both teams in the weeks leading up the the outdoor game.
Citizens Bank Park is the best location in Philadelphia because it will offer good sight lines and a smaller, cozier atmosphere than playing at an NFL-size stadium.
The Rangers are making their first appearance in The Winter Classic.
